Award Granted. :-) I don't allow punctuation at all in usernames, but I know a lot of servers do, so I figured I'd throw that in there as possibly a good alternative to the hyphen for you.
My local rules are: 3-30 characters, all lower case, can contain numbers but must start with a letter, no punctuation or spaces allowed. These rules jive with both my RADIUS and Imail (I'm using 6.06), so on my system at least, any username that fits these works with everything. I've yet to have any problem that pointed to username syntax. Knock on wood.
