Actually all that needs to be done is in the settings for SMTP Auth in the
email client, set ip to logon using and specify the username and password
there, that way your customer can still have NAV do it's scan thing and send
email.

Odds are when NAV went to make it's changes it mucked with the username and
with smtp auth trying to authenticate with the mucked up account name it was
failing. if ya specify the account name under the auth settings it should
work.
