It is possible to set this up in a way that does not leave an open mail
relay. I have done it on my system. It isn't that hard.

It should do that automatically.  If it receives an E-mail, it should store
it in its queue, and try delivering it.  If the IMail server is offline, it
should try again.  It's one of the most basic features of mailservers, that
I'm sure NAVGW supports.

The real question, though, is how to get it set up so you are not an open
relay.  :)
