Sounds about right. :)

Wrong, for these reasons and more:

1.  Dedicating I/O (meaning a full dedicated server for this point) to
high-traffic static data is not only smart but commonplace (see CDNs).

2. Even if IIS is running on the same machine, it can be given its own
drive  spindle/s  and  NIC,  which  will  then  give  it  unobtrusive,
dedicated I/O.

3.   IIS,   as   Ron   pointed  out,  will  serve  up  the  images  as
browser-cacheable.

4.  IMail's  web server is (shouldn't this be needless to say?) not as
stable  as  IIS  under load--not saying it isn't getting loads better,
but still undeniable--and anything you can get off it will allow it to
better serve its special purpose as a web messaging platform.
