Agreed, but the original poster will need to realize that if they do not do
it this way, then they should expect to see e-mail continuing to flow into
the IMail server until the cache for the domain has expired from all name
servers.

I would rather live with the short TTL for however long it takes so that
when the MX change is made, within ten minutes all e-mail for the domain
should be getting delivered to the customer's new Exchange server (also,
unless we are talking about an extremely busy e-mail domain, the DNS servers
most likely are not going to get "pounded" until the switch--most e-mail
domains get so little traffic that the name servers will hardly notice
anything).  Then all that has to be done is for all users of that e-mail
domain on the IMail server to check their IMail accounts one last time
before converting their e-mail clients over to the Exchange server.

Otherwise, other measures will need to be done in order to get all mail to
the Exchange server, which would be much more of a hassle then changing the
TTL and then waiting for the appropriate time to change the MX records.
