your DNS MX records shouldn't affect tcp/ip functioning

that sounds wrong. the default gateway on your Imail gox should be the ip 
of your router on your LAN at the end of your WAN link from Charter. Verify 
it with "route print" in a CLI window.

no, that's IMail SMTPD server saying it won't accept that email address.

That's not IMail STMP client delivering to charter and being rejected.
