Hello, I just wanted to let everyone know this issue has been resolved. The problem was our McAfee Netshield anti-virus program. While we were not scanning the Imail directory to begin with, for some reason, just the simple fact that the task was running at all slowed down web messaging to a crawl. Turning off NetShield corrected the problem. It appears that NetShield was scanning the temporary directory and this may have been the cause.. At least that is what the Imail support staff suggested.

CPU runs about 5% or so and we have 50% of our RAM available so it's not the server that is bottlenecked.
