Well in the logs, for a 1 minute period there are an avg of 1600 smtpd,
pop3, authentications, etc. tasks, processes, whatever they might be
called...

We are using the IMail DB.

1600  simultaneous  *sessions*, you mean? Surely not processes. Please
describe exactly what objects you're referring to.

Users != usage. I keep trying to make that stick.

What user database are you using?
