Interestingly, I too have all web servers (and had this mail server) set to
background.  But something I read (and can't find again) suggested setting
to applications.  So, daring me, I've set this mail server to applications.
No ill effects yet!

Everything else is tuned reasonably well (I think).  I'm not suffering a
performance issue (although there is never enough), just always trying to
make sure I've done things right.
