Ron, that's what I thought.... I double checked my virus scanner and all imail dirs where excluded, I added the temp and winnt dirs to the exlcude and found a major performance increase!!!
I am now determining which file(s) in particular are the ones that imail is opening and closing repeatedly or if the AV exclusion list was not being heeded. fyi... what led me to suspect this was something I noticed in the imail administrator. Withthe AV running, even though the imail dir structure was excluded, the listing of domains would appear one at a time, painting down the screen step by step. I shut off the scanner and the same list of domain is displayed in one screen paint. When I figure this one out, I'll post my findings.
