also if you don't make them authenticate, and one of them does something stupid, you 
won't be able to prove that it was him. With authentication, you will have proof of 
stupid activity in the log and he will not be able to deny it.

Er..no....they are dialling in over the Internet and with a full set of
Class B addresses that would mean keying in some 64770 addresses along with
the relevant subnet mask.

IMail does take Network ranges in "Relay for Addresses" doesn't it?
