In this case, my recommendation would be to keep the mail2 A record, but
remove it from the MX record. That way, there won't be any
confusion. Mail will still be delivered as normal, except if your
server isn't reachable, you ensure that other mailservers will only have to try
once before realizing that your server isn't reachable.

I wasn't aware that mail could be delivered without an mx record.
Technically, it can, but that isn't the issue here.

So, you are saying, remove the mail2.todhunter.com mx record from DNS, but
leave the mail2 host entry?
Yes.

No offense, but, you sure that is going to work? I will catch holy h*ll
if my internal users can't send or receive email!
Here are the relevant MX and A records right now:

todhunter.com. MX IN 3600 mail.todhunter.com. [Preference = 10]
todhunter.com. MX IN 3600 mail2.todhunter.com. [Preference = 10]
mail.todhunter.com. A IN 3600 24.73.160.163
mail2.todhunter.com. A IN 3600 24.73.160.163

This says that a mailserver should try either mail.todhunter.com or mail2.todhunter.com. In either case, the same IP of 24.73.160.163 will be used. I'm suggesting you change it to:

todhunter.com. MX IN 3600 mail.todhunter.com. [Preference = 10]
mail.todhunter.com. A IN 3600 24.73.160.163
mail2.todhunter.com. A IN 3600 24.73.160.163

In this case, it says that a mailserver should try mail.todhunter.com (at 24.73.160.163). So mailservers will still send mail to the same place. Any mail clients that refer to mail2.todhunter.com will still reach your mailserver, as well.

Changing an MX record will only affect mail delivery to the domain from mailservers, and won't affect mail clients or anything else.
