This is one of the topics that is periodically discussed on the
forum. It is too bad the archives do not seem to be able to keep
such data - ah - "archived" - but I suppose that would be too much
to expect.
The most commonly described element associated with this
phenomenon seems to be very large mail boxes. It is mostly
correlative data and certainly not proof of causality but it is so
common that it would be surprising if it were not involved.
Certainly from a purely theoretical perspective the format of the
unix type mailbox employed by IMAIL is not exactly the best choice
for someone wanting to keep a few hundred million bytes.
However, even knowing that, many of the respondents, if not most,
say there is nothing they can do to police their users
predilection to save millions, even billions, of bytes of e-mail.
It is probably the important stuff like a collection of blonde
jokes, urban myths taken to heart, and 500 Mb bmp files from Aunt
Sally and Uncle Bill.
