It seems that all the problems reported only affects w2k sp2 - if you are running sp3 it should be safe to run the patch. Patched two minor servers yesterday without problems.
Apparantly there is a version of the ntoskrnl.exe that is NOT compatible with this patch. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;815021 Installing sp3 *does* take care of the version problem, however, it is my understanding from this article, that this patch is compatible with sp2, as long as you don't have the versions referred to above.
