My guess would be its DNS related. If it gets a "doesn't exist" response from a DNS query there's no point trying multiple times.
Well, there was no internet connection so the reason it "doesn't exist" is because the query couldn't get out. Sheesh, in this day of high tech you would think these machines would be smart enough to figure that out themselves, and just spool the mail till the Network Admin can bug the ISP long enough to get the pipe back up. :) Thanks, after doing a bit of research on IMAIL's site, that is exactly what the problem is. "unknown host" generates an immediate bounce message and is caused by IMAIL's DNS server being unable to resolve domain name to IP address.
