We also are running 8.03 with moderate webmail traffic. No problems.
Win2K Srv on a dual AMD 2200+ with 1GB RAM and 3 drives (system, spool, mailbox) with Declude Virus/Junkmail.
Just my .02, but I think it's at least a little relevant.
We are currently running 7.15 on a Win2k SP4 all updates, dual P4 900's 1.5 GB memory. Declude AV/JM. We process roughly 100k messages a day, with what I would consider low to moderate WebMail users.
Prior to yesterday, the IMail, spool, and mailbox folders were all on a single raid 5 array, on the same partition. The OS was on it's own partition, same array, and the spool file was on it's own partition, same array. (I know... pretty stupid, but I inherited it this way... :) With this configuration, a single mailbox with ~10 small (>5k) messages was taking about 1-2 minutes to load.
Yesterday, I installed two new drives for mirroring, separate array, separate partition, same controller. I moved the spool folder to this new partition. Everything else stayed the same. And miraculously, the same account would load almost instantaneously. (Well, not really miraculous, I kinda expected that to happen.)
Of course, this is all irrelevant if your install was done well :)
