When I set up Entourage on my Mac to use my imail server as my smtp server, and set the option for 'SMTP server requires authentication' I get the following error:
"The SMTP server for "<<dominant>>" does not recognize any of the authentication methods supported by Entourage. To send mail, try disabling SMTP authentication in the account settings or talk to your administrator."

If your mail client doesn't recognize Imail's very common AUTH service extension announcements, you're pretty much out of luck.
Are you sure Imail is set to announce SMTP AUTH ?
