Interesting option which you suggested though, as I would have not of doing it that way.

Actually, it does run under Cygwin, if you're game.

Yet another option, strange though it may be, would be to set up each workstation with an Outlook rule that immediately moves messages downloaded over POP3 into the user's IMAP4 Inbox (and also note that content-sensitive sorting rules can and do apply to messages that come in over either service) to "concentrate" messages in the IMAP store. You can set the IMAP service as the default, open to the IMAP Inbox in startup, etc.
