I m experimenting with the list server. When I receive messages (that I ve sent as tests by myself), they contain line after line of formatting information (font, size, etc.) so what may start out as a one-line post turns into a L-O-N-G post! I use Word as my e-mail editor and that seems to be where all that extra code is originating, but I don t want to switch that off and I can t expect others to do the same.
It's one or the other. Word is a great word processor, but creates lousy E-mails from a technical perspective (IIRC, Word turns a one-line E-mail into about 10K -- about 100 times its original size). If you want to use Word, and can accept the consequences (such as wasted bandwidth, not being able to post to some mailing lists that limit the size of posts, an occasional complaint or two), go for it. If you can find an E-mail client that you prefer, though, I would recommend using it.
In either case, I'm not aware of any way to get Word to generate "good" E-mail (either text or "plain old HTML", which by itself is normally discouraged, but is much smaller than HTML Word documents in E-mail). But then again, I've never used Word as a mail client.
