My 8.03 server lives on a single IP address. AOL has decided that it is blocking mail from my IP. Attempting to send email to an AOL address ends up with this result:

They don't even give us a chance - we connect, and they dump us instantly.

Calling them at that number gives you not much more than a promise that "they'll look into it and get back to you", i.e. they won't bother and will never call you back. The postmaster web site doesn't help much.

However, I just did a test from my mail server. I did a manual telnet to a few different AOL listed MX servers on port 25, including the one my server tried above, and got this:

220-rly-ya02.mx.aol.com ESMTP mail_relay_in-ya2.4; Tue, 16 Dec 2003 17:55:45 -0500
220-America Online (AOL) and its affiliated companies do not
220- authorize the use of its proprietary computers and computer
220- networks to accept, transmit, or distribute unsolicited bulk
220- e-mail sent from the internet. Effective immediately: AOL
220- may no longer accept connections from IP addresses which
220 have no reverse-DNS (PTR record) assigned.

I was able to type a manual HELO, RCPT FROM, MAIL TO, DATA and successfully send an email. The server has only one IP bound, so it can't be because it's using a different IP address. What gives? Anyone? Why can I send mail manually via telnet, but my mail server gets cut off at the knees?
