Our users download from POP, however their PST files from outlook are
located on a network drive each employee has mapped for personal files.
These drives get backed up nightly. We use Veritas Backup Exec & SDLT drives

Out of curiosity, do your users use IMAP? From a backup point of view,
if IMAP were used your email backup would be taken centrally right? If
not and all your users download from POP, do you not backup your email
or do you do things someother way?

I believe they are entirely dependant on Exchange for full
functionality. It uses some server add-on software.

If I'm not mistaken there is a software component that can be added to a
PC with a direct public ip internet connection that will forward Outlook
data to a blackberry. I'm not sure exactly how it works, but if you do
some digging on the Blackberry website you'll find some info. I also
found some additional info on the wireless phone provider sites Nextel
and Verizon.

The principals in my company use Cellular PC cards from Nextel to
connect their laptops or iPAQ handhelds so they can check e-mail (pop3).
Not quite as nice as what the blackberry promises, but it does the
trick.

In fact the powers that be in my office have me researching making a
transition over to Exchange for this. However after they saw the price
tag compared to Imail they questioned it's necessity. For 130 users I
saw a quote of over $10k as opposed to Imail's sub $3k price. Plus I
needed to consolidate a couple forests in Active Directory to prepare
for it.

I don't want exchange. I enjoy the relative simplicity stability of
IMAIL.
