Didn't like the classic web templates so tried to go back to old yellow standard ones and that made things worse.
IMAP4 performance also poor since upgrade. Bit the bullet and dumped all but user dirs and restored old version from backup. All OK now.
So would be VERY wary of upgrading.
One last thing. Just to check that it wasn't anything to do with existing server, I quickly installed 8.10 on a freshly installed 2003 server and copied a couple of users files over. It was just as bad and that server is a brand new dual Xeon 2GHz with 2Gb RAM. Incidentally a new user with no emails/folders logs in to webmail OK. So it would appear to be something to do indexing of messages and then production of web content that is different and causing performance decrease.
