You know this is going to be an endless argument because I don't like the RFC either. Blocking NULL sender takes away at least 60% of spam right off the top.
Do you have evidence to support that, or is that a guess?
Checking the last 100 spams received here, none used a NULL sender. While everyone has their own unique "spam profile" (the type of spam they get based on how spammers obtained their address), it's hard to imagine someone with 60% of their spam sent from a NULL sender.
I know that a number of MTAs only allow 1 recipient when the NULL sender is used, which could account for why it is rarely seen in spams. I'm not aware of any point in time where even 10% of spam was sent with a NULL sender.
