In the UK there a few different role outs of BB. The more recent in the UK is the consumer model, where you buy the handset and go on a payment plan where the Telco actually provide you with an email address of theirs, limited storage etc. This sounds similar to what your 'big boys' have.
The better version, the corporate version consists of the handset and similar payment plan, but also a BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) which hooks into MS Exchange or Lotus. In the UK the BES's cost around �2,000, but you can also get a Mini BES that's limited to 5 users. This means you would also need an exchange/lotus server to be able to use the BES, but there are a few advantages to running the BB solution in house. So instead of the BB connecting to the Telco's BES via GPRS, it connects to your BES which directly connects to your own server - meaning no limit on attachments. I guess it depends on how corporate you are, how much cash you have, and how much all the extra features are worth.
