Check in task manager your process list to see what is eating your CPU. That
will start giving you clues. Tell us what processes are eating your CPU to
see how we can help you.
 
You said that SMTP is eating CPU.. are you sure is the smtp program.. in
your process list?. Could be perhaps an antivirus scanner scanning your
emails?

your SMTP..

I just have similar problems with our SMTP until we found out (suggested by
the list) that we were using a 16bit antivirus scanner instead of a 32bit.
We switched to 32 bit and smtp went back to normal.
