Actually, quite a few MTAs do not respond on port 25 and are not pingable or traceroutable (outgoing mailserver gateways often will not respond on port 25 for IPs that are not authorized to connect, and many organizations block ICMP packets for pings and tracerts, and most block UDP packets for traceroutes).
Of course, in this case, I would agree that this is almost certainly not an MTA, based on the other evidence provided.
