I use a similar script.
It's just that 100 leftover files a day kind of made me nervous wondering if
mail wasn't being delivered while it should.

Not a direct answer to your question, but related to the issue:  For
maintenance I run a script on my Imail spool folder and delete anything more
than X days old.  Otherwise I have to do it manually, which is no fun.
