I'm still not sure why you recommend not trusting "complex (remote) GUI tools".

simpler is always better.

Actually, www.dnsstuff.com is much simpler than dig! With www.dnsstuff.com, you enter the hostname and which record you want to look up -- nothin' else is required. So I guess you're recommending www.dnsstuff.com over dig. <G>

I would estimate that the #1 problem with using nslookup/dig/etc is that the person using the tool runs it on a computer set up to use a local DNS server

nslookup and dig can send a query directly to whatever DNS you tell them to query. I've never heard of configuration problems with nslookup and dig, except in your FUD.

This isn't FUD, Len. With the DNS lookup tool at www.dnsstuff.com it is virtually *impossible* to go to the wrong DNS server. With dig, it often will go to the wrong one *by default*. That aint' FUD.

ut you've still managed to avoid explaining why those "complex (remote) GUI tools" (www.dnsstuff.com) should not be trusted.

see above. I try to avoid self-evident, baby-talk explanations unless requested.

So "trust" to you refers to the level of complexity (with more complex being better), rather than the accuracy of the results. That's FUD if I ever heard it. :)
