All a user is trying to do is send an email to an address at Earthlink.
That smells like a "A instead of MX" issue, where IMail is going to the A record (which I believe Earthlink uses as their SMTP servers) rather than the MX record. This could be the correct behavior, depending on what happened prior to that. If you post the IMail SMTP log file entries for this transaction, that should help determine what happened.
