While this does not help you, I also experienced this problem when a client
my server is a gateway for lost their phone lines and internet connection
over a weekend. Queue Manager retry timer was set for 30 minutes and SMTP
tries before returning to sender was 96. We started seeing bounce/returns
after 12 hours.

This is on Imail 8.12.
