I'm pretty much a 'lurker' on this list...partially due to finding time when I can
read the messages, but mostly, due to the far superior knowledge of others...I pale by
comparison. However, Ipswitch's decision to change market directions with ICS compels
me to tell you about a book I read a couple of weeks ago.
The book is titled "In Search of Stupidity" by author Merrill R. (Rick) Chapman, and
it chronicles major computer marketing blunders over the past 20 years. Chapman
details the marketing mistakes made by companies such as Digital Research (CP/M OS),
MicroPro (WordStar), Ashton-Tate (dataBase IV), IBM (OS/2), and many others that led
to their demise. Chapman worked in the marketing department in several of these
companies, and gives a first-hand account of what happened. It's an interesting read.
Needless to say, Ipswitch's decision to drop IMail for ICS has an uncanny resemblance
to those failed companies in Chapman's book. I wonder if anyone at Ipswitch has read
Chapman's book!
