In the process of evaluating alternatives to the newly overpriced Imail
software, I ran into what appears to be an explanation of this problem. The
explanation I saw has nothing to do with the NIC or the operating system,
but rather with the combination of the SERVER SPEED, the efficiency of the
installed software on the server and the speed of the INTERNET and the
receiving server.

The jist of the explanation is this: If the internet is extremely SLOW and
the NIC, OPERATING SYSTEM and MAIL SERVER software are TOO FAST, then this
error will occur.

The VisNetic MailServer actually has a setting that allows the admin of the
server to adjust the connection/wait/processing speed, in milliseconds,
which is defaulted to 10 and their recommendations was that it be increased
to 50 when this error occurs and never more than 80 milliseconds.

This error was outlined in the documentation and FAQs for VisNetic
Mailserver at:
http://imageserver.deerfield.com/marcom/visnetic_mailserver/VisNetic_MailSer
ver7_datasheet_letter.pdf

I will try to find the original information and repost it to this forum
later this afternoon or evening.

PS: In spite of the fact that so many on this list are opposed to
Challenge/Response (which can be totally DISABLED should the installer so
desire), there are a great many features of the VisNetic Mailserver that are
MUCH better than any other product we have so far reviewed. This will
probably be our final choice, in spite of the initial additional costs for
the product.

Subject: Re: [IMail Forum] Outbound Mail Failing - send error 10054

I have been getting 10054 errors for years and I have postfix gateways
handling mail first. I just ignore them at this point. Ipswitch told
me I had a "low quality NIC" and that was the problem. They said I
should buy a 3com NIC. I told them they were full of it. I have dual
port Intel pro server NIC on it. They have never been able to solve the
problem. Great support huh? :)
