We use imail and declude and transact 400,000 messages per day over about 250 domains. The fact is that neither declude imail combo, nor imail internal antispam and antivirus could keep up with our traffic, even though we had dual xeon's and a new high performance dell server.
Yep, many IMGate users have observed the same. Imail+friends, already not inexpensive, simply don't scale for many people, even with $1000's of the best hardware and weeks/months of tweaking.

sendmail is not IMail, not pop, not imap, not webmail. That switchover would be very expensive in hours and support and extremely visible to your users.
Then I found something that let me keep my investment in my current mail server.

You could have achieved, as many others have, the same rescue of Imail by installing IMGate for free, or pay $600 to have it installed.
Most people have been able to minimize their dependence on proprietary hardware, the opposite of your choice.

Most people here, having spent $1000's on Imail+friends, would not be feeling very "saved" when spending another $13K to get a mail system that worked.
