Except for the one last month, I haven't seen any of his posts, or I
probably would have said something.

I still say this is a support forum, not a marketing list. Product
announcements that are not in response to a question or problem should be
taken elsewhere, IMO.

Regarding the flack I've seen about people posting objections to this: I
would agree that we shouldn't go overboard, but without posts to let
everyone know we don't think the post was appropriate, we can't determine
what guidelines to follow. Without those guidelines, potential posters
don't know what to do when considering a post such as this.

Which begs the question...what are the official guidelines for posting to
the list? I know IMail posted something on this sometime in the past year.
We can let that settle it once and for all.

Darin.

Let me just put my two cents worth in here.

I've gone through my IMail archives, and found that this person has posted
about this product an average of about once every 3 months. That doesn't
seem unreasonable to me. Further, it doesn't seem unreasonably to the
people on this list!

What happened? IMail is going downhill. That's the problem. Of his
previous posts since 2001, there was only one complaint (a simple "Is this
a sales pitch?" response), until last month's post. I do feel that the
complaints about that one were justified, it came out 2 weeks after a
previous announcement, and was only used to generate sales (with "SAVE $20"
in the subject). However, I'm guessing both the reason for that post and
the unusual volume of complaints were due to IMail (the market
disappearing, and people being upset at the new direction of IMail).

This time, however, the post was nearly identical to many previous posts,
that nobody had complained about.

So yes, complaining about the post last month was OK. But I just can't see
why people are so upset about this one, when they weren't in the past.
