I think most people that are trying to accomplish this move the log files nightly to another drive/partition, and archive daily, weekly, and/or monthly.

I have been doing it, the reason of wishing to separate them is to split the read/write load of the hard drive between the spooled messages and the log files by separating them on two different physical drives.
