I believe you need to open the ports above 1025 to initiate the outgoing connections.

correct. when an app needs a tcp or udp port, it ask the OS, which returns a free port from the unprivileged range of ports 1024 - 65K.


Besides opening ports at the tcp/ip, you could use a host firewall, like ZoneAlarm, to define _applications_ trusted to connect to internet.

Since a mail server should only have static, known handful of apps connecting to internet, the firewall will block all other outbound attempts, esp the malicious ones.
