Sorry all, I was out of town over the weekend. I had previously checked on
ARIN, and saw that Valueweb is authoritative for our IP block. However, they
say that since they don't manage the domain (econocaribe.net), they can't
create the PTR records for it. I've been back and forth with them many
times, and have made no headway. That's why I came to the list with the
question, because I wanted to make sure I was interpreting the info
correctly. I was in a hurry in the original email, and didn't specify that I
had already saw this info, that was my fault. Anyway, thanks to everyone for
confirming what I thought, now I have to figure out how to make Valueweb
understand that they can create a PTR record for us.

Not truly a wild-goose chase, as the ISP -- usually much more
responsive by phone than a registrar -- would be able to rapidly
discern the extenuating routing circumstances and would direct the
client to the proper place.

And I'd say that Darin's 999/1000 is actually much too low. It's
probably more like 99,999/100,000 times that a person who. . .

a) doesn't have a PTR for their mailserver in April 2005;

b) doesn't know that forward DNS is unrelated to reverse DNS;

c) exhausts the DNS resources on the net without finding guidance
there;

d) posts to an IMail list with this FAQ, without noting that they have
already consulted their bandwidth provider, as the archives (until
now) always recommend; and

e) is the sole IT person charged with solving this problem

. . . does not own their Class C. This is not meant as a slur on Ken,
who certainly has skills outside this arena that we do not, but based
on experience.
