Uh, this is not "integrating with Active Directory" -- it's an answer
to a totally different question.

One can use the ODBC userbase option in a variety of situations. It is
well-documented and generally works as advertised.

Using an existing directory as the directory service for
directory-enabled applications is the best practice. It goes without
saying that standalone SQL back ends are endlessly flexible; however,
they are not the best fit when integration is the goal.

Furthermore, true primary/secondary failover would not be possible
with SQL unless one's SQL servers were clustered, a considerable
expense, or if all user management interfaces used "two-phase commit."
Having primary and secondary servers as DCs in the same AD domain,
however, provides built-in and robust userbase replication.
