The first problem occurred that day at 9:44 AM. Nothing unusual there.
Some spam delivery viruses may be holding connections open so that'll be
the next thing to chart.

The logs show nothing unusual for this time period.
How about counting the number of
1) SMTPD "connect from" per hour?
2) netstat -an | find /c "TIME_WAIT" >> /path/to/time_wait.log,
snapshotted every 10 minutes
