I don't know if anyone would be in a position to comment as to why but maybe if u didn't use the account but still published your email. Might be a virus which could have used your email stored in your address book or worst the computer which you used to create the account from could be public and could well be compromised. The list is endless...

I had never actually used the account which I opened last year in August. I logged into the account and saw the "Welcome" message from GMail (still unread) in my In-box. Funny thing. In the "Spam" box however were 27 emails trying to sell me "Top Quality Software". Now if my user name for this GMail account was an actual name or even an actual word I could see a spammer trying to get something through to me with a dictionary attack on GMail, however the address is a one word combination of a two letter abbriviation attached to a real word. Very odd that "they" found that account.
