I don't know if anyone would be in a position to comment as to why but maybe
if u didn't use the account but still published your email. Might be a virus
which could have used your email stored in your address book or worst the
computer which you used to create the account from could be public and could
well be compromised. The list is endless...

Subject: [IMail Forum] Spam on a GMail account

I got an email from Google today warning me that my GMail account had been
dormant and was at risk of being closed. I had never actually used the
account which I opened last year in August. I logged into the account and
saw the "Welcome" message from GMail (still unread) in my In-box. Funny
thing. In the "Spam" box however were 27 emails trying to sell me "Top
Quality Software".

Now if my user name for this GMail account was an actual name or even an
actual word I could see a spammer trying to get something through to me
with a dictionary attack on GMail, however the address is a one word
combination of a two letter abbriviation attached to a real word.

Very odd that "they" found that account.
