"Hangup" means that the server got a SIGHUP signal, meaning that the TCP/IP connection was broken without a proper LOGOUT being exchanged first.

I have no idea what the "send/receive" button does in Outlook, but it should not be necessary in any IMAP client for the user to do anything in order to see new mail automatically.

I don't pretend to be an expert on Outlook. It has been about 10 years since I last tried using Outlook with IMAP. I found it to be a very unsatisfactory IMAP client (it is alright for calendaring and contact management) and I have heard nothing to indicate that this situation has changed with newer versions. I know, however, that other people have contrived to make Outlook work with IMAP (at least good enough for them).

As a guess, I suspect that the "send/receive" button tosses out whatever IMAP session is present (thus causing the "Hangup") and tries to open a new one. The freezes happen when, for whatever reason, she can't get a new session.

I also suspect that some user education may be necessary. Users tend to collect folklore and treat it as gospel; and sometimes that resulting "must do" activity is the underlying cause of the problem. But someone who actually knows what's going on with Outlook would need to do this; I would just be the blind leading the blind.

I am fairly confident, however, that the issue is not an UW imapd issue; and thus there is little/nothing that can be done in UW imapd that would help the situation. The answer is probably something at the user's end; either with the Outlook configuration or possibly with the user's usage patterns.

Hopefully someone with more Outlook expertise may pipe up with some other suggestions. You may also want to bring your question to the comp.mail.imap newsgroup; although take what you are told there with a rock of salt...
