Is there a way for the root user to do this on behalf of a user?
If you have to convert existing traditional Unix mailboxes to another format, the straightforward way is to use the -u switch. Thereafter, it might be necessary to change the group ownership of the converted mailboxes, as these will belong to the root group after conversion. I successfully used this approach for user accounts without shell access and I posted the conversion script to this list, about two weeks ago. I used mixcvt, but mailutil has similar command line switches. If you have a recent version of the UW-IMAP server, you should consider using the mix format instead of mbx.
