Fail the whole operation? I don't think with ACLs that's very common situation when you have access to root folder but not to one of it's children. As for loops in hierarchy tree .. Well, they're pretty nasty in any case. I'd say follow them, but make sure you don't get to infinite loop. If you see a mailbox you can't update, abort.
