Both of these will be very hard to do in a mail store that is not
specifically designed for IMAP; and if the mail store is specifically
designed for IMAP then the underlying problem can be addressed in other
ways.

A much easier method would be to abolish the RENAME command entirely, as I
suggested, and create a new "presentation name" metadata property for
mailboxes that clients could set to some arbitrary value.  There's still
many of the same problems, but at least they have straightforward (if not
necessarily fast) solutions when going this way.
