Both of these will be very hard to do in a mail store that is not specifically designed for IMAP; and if the mail store is specifically designed for IMAP then the underlying problem can be addressed in other ways. A much easier method would be to abolish the RENAME command entirely, as I suggested, and create a new "presentation name" metadata property for mailboxes that clients could set to some arbitrary value.
