Then what is the point of using maildir? If you need to lock anyway, then you lose the only advantage of maildir. You do, however, acquire several disadvantages. The reasons for wanting to use maildir are: 1) interoperability with other software that uses maildir. Note that the maildir community basically defines the multi-access problems noted in this thread as "uninteresting, doesn't happen so we don't care." Perhaps for a single local file MUA, they are right. 2) desire to use a one-file-per-message type format. But there are other formats in that class which are substantially superior for use with IMAP. Cyrus is a notable example. 3) religion.
