Thank you Bonno and Rod for your helpful replies.

You guys are right, it looks like I wont be giving up my imgate machine
anytime soon. I contacted SmarterMail and it turns out it's a not scalable
solution, they say that their box can accommodate around 40k users. I still
love their GUI interface and the stats they provide, so I will use them and
imgate, but looks like declude will be out. SM provides a lot of built-in
spam measures.

I asked them a few question and thought I would share it with the rest:

1 - The limitation of 40k, is it for active user sessions? or just a number
of
emails accounts possible per server?
- The limit of 40,000 users is a practical one for total users based on
typical activity on a mail server in a hosting environment. 40,000
concurrent users is not possible on a single Windows-based machine because
of socket limitations.

2 - Is smartermail clustarable?
- SmarterMail is not currently clusterable

3 - Where are the user accounts stored?
- User accounts and all configuration data is stored in the file system in a
combination of XML and proprietary files.

4 - Can SM utilize SQL ?
- SmarterMail cannot currently tie into database systems

5 - Can SM work/utilize windows x64 platform ?
- SmarterMail can run under 64 bit

6 - Is it possible to have the web mail on a separate machine than where the
SM engine runs ?
- The web mail currently has to be on the same machine as the other
protocols. This actually leads to the best performance in our experience.

Hi,
If you have it now, how much time and effort do you need to invest to keep
in going? As far as I know IMGate is pretty much a "fire and forget" setup
for the basic function. As you mailserver will definitely like having IMGate
as an inbound filter and maybe even as an outbound mailer I would simply
leave it in place.

If you don't intend to keep it in the future just set up a protocol for
removing it when you are ready to do so. That way if the server does fail at
an inconvenient moment you'll have all the steps to take in front of you and
it should take just minutes to get things going.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies.

I am actually debating whether I still need my imgate or not. Still
testing
and have not migrated my heavy domains yet. Will keep list posted on my
  findings regarding load and spam.

We switched to SmarterMail several years ago and with the latest
release have actually eliminated our external IMGate filtering server
as we had to deal with too many (> 1000) domains coming from several
disjoint (FreeBSD, Linux, windows, external customer's) mail servers
(not just 1 SmarterMail). The new greylisting feature in SmarterMail
really cut down on spam making this possible. I still have it in place
for use as a filtering server for a select few domains and as a backup
  MX server.

If you decide you still need your IMGate server you just need to
switch to a new program to export your users to IMGate. This is
available for free on the Smartertools site.
Here is a link to the instructions:
    http://www.smartertools.com/downloads/smartermail/smailusr-readme.pdf
  and here is the download:
    ftp://ftp.balloons.com/pub/smailusr.zip

If you want to save some money on Smarter Mail we offer it at 10% off
  of list price.

nothing, except the Windows script for exporting Smartermail users to
  Imgate.
