I've seen this before, but can't recall the reason,
(I know it's pretty rare).

Are you running low on hard drive space?

Did the computer,(or any of the mail services), crash
lately?


I've seen messages get dumped into the "dead" directory
and a 'Locked' file get left in the "prein" directory
after the server recovered from a bug-check crash.
