Seems like a worthwhile idea. It's always happened to me when I was away for
a couple of days, so it wouldn't have helped, but that may not apply to
everyone.

The real problem is that the volume of spam has made the logs much larger.
When I turn on the user check, my 'R' logs exceed 10 megabytes/per day. That
doesn't take long to fill up a disk.

If I had to guess, it would be a timeout issue (for which you can do little
or nothing).

The reason is that TF is running on these incoming messages and (in most
cases) deleting them. So space is being made as we wait. My guess is that
SMTPRCV tries to write and finally succeeds after a long wait for TF to make
room. By that time, the sender has given up, and the reply never gets
received.

I suspect that SMTPRCV tries multiple times to write the message (each one
with more 'X's in the name), which is why we get multiple partial messages
as well.

Why is TF slow in this case? Because it takes a long time to time out its
attempts to write its logs, which usually on the same device and thus also
can't be written. Once it gives that up, the message will be deleted. Making
space for other mail to come in.

Of course, after a while, everything will grind to a halt, once there aren't
any more messages that need to be deleted.

                Randy.
