What protocol are you using? IMAP or POP? Is it possible that the problem may be with the domain and not the Mac or Mail app?
Have you tried downloading messages from another email account like a Gmail account which support POP3 / IMAP protocol? If you have not, I suggest you (a) create a new gmail.com email ID (b) configure it download in Mail app (c) send 10 test messages to this gmail.com email ID and (d) see if the problem occurs.
