Because Sun, as part of the community, should have some say in this as well considering they're footing all the bills, contributed the code, etc.? Not only that, Java is a very important language among enterprise environments ant o developers. Finally, why do you think there was such a huge push for GNU/Linux distributions to be able to freely include Java by default in their distributions? Because Users want Java, that's why...
